ABOUT THE HOSPITAL

Hospital Overview

Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) is Korea’s oldest and most prestigious medical institution, tracing its lineage to 1885 when it was established as Gwanghyewon — Korea’s first modern Western medicine hospital, founded by royal decree of King Gojong. With 141 years of continuous operation, SNUH is affiliated with Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea’s most prestigious medical school.

The hospital operates approximately 1,792 beds across 33+ clinical departments and numerous specialized centers. Annual volume includes 5.2 million total patients, 30,000+ international patients from 80+ countries, and the International Healthcare Center operates 24 hours a day with interpreters in English, Chinese, Mongolian, Russian, Arabic, and Spanish.

SNUH’s unique distinctions include being the IAEA’s only nuclear medicine and molecular imaging cooperation center in the world, performing Korea’s first successful liver transplant in 1988, ranking 8th globally for number of clinical trials conducted, and reaching its 3,000th liver transplant in January 2026. The SNUH system encompasses the main campus, SNU Cancer Hospital, SNU Children’s Hospital (Korea’s largest), Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center, and the SNUH Healthcare System Gangnam Center for health checkups.
