Asan Medical Center
Korea's largest hospital, ranked #25 globally (Newsweek 2025). World's undisputed liver transplant leader with 9,000+ transplants and zero donor deaths. 6 specialties in global top 10.
Hospital Overview
Asan Medical Center (AMC) is the largest hospital in South Korea and one of the most important medical institutions in Asia. Founded in 1989 by the Asan Foundation (established by Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung), AMC is affiliated with the University of Ulsan College of Medicine.
The numbers are staggering: 2,715 beds, 67 operating rooms, 524,700 square meters of floor space, 54 clinical departments, 28 specialized centers, and approximately 52,838 advanced surgeries annually. Over 20,000 international patients from roughly 100 countries visit each year.
AMC’s liver transplantation program is not just Korea’s best — it is the world’s best by any measurable standard. The hospital reached the milestone of 9,000 liver transplants in April 2025, performed the world’s first modified right-lobe liver transplant (now a global standard), invented the two-to-one living donor liver transplant, and has maintained zero living donor deaths across its entire history. AMC conducts one in three of all liver transplants performed in Korea annually. In Newsweek’s specialty rankings, AMC places in the global top 10 in six specialties: oncology (#4), gastroenterology (#4), endocrinology (#4), neurology (#6), urology (#6), and orthopedics (#8).
